Food and Games

The perks of living in a thriving metropolitan city for a foodie like me are that there’s a new restaurant around the corner everyday. So of course, come every weekend, I’m out and about scouting for new places to eat at –and boy, do I find many. Each one better than the other, this city offers up some of the best culinary treats.

And while I would never really stop my relentless journey for food, every now and then, I take a pause. By pause I mean I then tend to visit one particular restaurant a few times before I move on to another –mind you, I only pause if it’s really worth it, so restaurants better get your A-game on!

That’s the story of my discovery of Smoke House Deli.

The target area was set: Vasant Kunj. Background checks had been conducted: bless Zomato and Google. The contenders were looking proud and poised: every restaurant in vasant kunj. Now all that remained was a little game of inky pink ponky…

And that’s how I walked into Smoke House Deli one fine Friday evening. With the quirky décor, I’d actually secretly been wishing the game of pinky pinky would really land me there. So there I was, wishes fulfilled, curious and excited. I carefully surveyed the lively crowd (a Friday night, so you can only imagine), and shamelessly peeped at all the food on their table –my way of telling what’s best (I’m all for judging a book by its cover, looks matter to a certain degree, especially when it comes to food!).

So I placed my food order, and sipped on my freshly squeezed juice… and I knew in that moment, even if the food didn’t turn out to be amazing, I’d definitely be back for the drinks! But as soon as the food arrived, I was completely sold. This was going to be the restaurant in vasant kunj where I’d take a good long pause!

Bangalore Takes My Taste Buds for a Ravishing Spin

Bangalore, with its thick and dense trees forming beautiful boulevards across the city and consistently wonderful weather, despite its now infamous road traffic, has become a hub for the Indian youth. And so I too, decided it was high time I paid a visit and found out what the fuss is all about! I had many friends who like many other youngsters, had flocked to Bangalore. So with a couch to crash on, and a flight ticket in hand, I began my Bangalore adventure.

What I didn’t realise was that apart from exploring the city itself, my taste buds were in for an exploration of their very own. From “I’ll take you to The Only Place, you’re going to love the steak there!” to “Oh my god, Millers Forty Six has the best burgers ever!” and “For dinner we’ll go to such-and-such place, and lunch tomorrow will be at so-and-so place,” I was being shuttled between the best of the best restaurants at Bangalore.

smoke chicken in bangalore

I fell in love with the fish in tomato sauce at Koshy’s. And believe you me I also ate fish biryani there! Fish biryani, who would have thought? Whether you’re looking for Tenderloin Steak or smoked chicken in bangalore, the city’s got it all. And moreover, I was still left with money in my pocket, after eating out every single day!

Amidst the metropolitan buzz of the city, you will find a majestic, old structure that houses the famous Hard Rock Café. The ambience at Hard Rock, with the friendly and jovial staff, classic rock music, and a menu that will make you salivate like a dog, is nothing short of brilliance. You will find some of the best Tenderloin Steak and smoked chicken in Bangalore here.

Since my return, I’ve been left impatiently waiting for the day I can go back to Bangalore and take my taste buds for a spin yet again!

Cooking the perfect Tenderloin Steak

There is no reason why Tenderloin steak should intimidate you, unless there is some life-threatening competition that you need to win at any cost.

Filet mignon or tenderloin steak can be fun to fiddle with. Having said that, there are a multitude of ways in which it can be done- all crisply and nicely. The idea of the best tenderloin steak sure is riveting-it being embellished with aromatic hints of rosemary and nuttiness of brown butter. Deck it up with ideas and innovations, and voila! You’ll simply love yourself for having cooked it in the first place! Sure you will.

Tenderloin steak is, well, tender. It’s lean, and so has very little fat. However, with less and less of fat, the juiciness and flavour is somehow compromised on. The more you cook it up, the closer you get to eliminating the fat, and the drier you end up making it.

restaurant in vasant kunj

Ideally, the tenderloin steak should be cooked at high temperature to get a crunchier and tastier outside. Take the filet out of the oven 30 minutes before you want to cook it and season it with salt and pepper. Let the filet cool down to the room temperature which will help to ensure that cook it to the right doneness. Sear the filets for over 3-4 minutes and let depending upon the thickness. Don’t meddle with it; just let it cook on its own accord, says a chef at a famous restaurant in Vasant Kunj and Smoke House Deli.

For taste, and to add some lubrication, smear the filets with melted herb butter. You can tell the doneness by idea, and by judgement. Because you have cooked a few fillets, you will know how much more you need to cook it up to bring out the real taste of it. It’s always advisable not to cut into the filet to tell the doneness. It will end up horribly drying up the meat for the loss of juice and make it taste dry and tasteless.

How to judge if you are at a good restaurant

Eating well is the ultimate measure of luxury these days and ‘just how well’ really defines the class and level of indulgence you are willing to buy yourself. And when there are quite so many options to choose from, you would definitely want to part from your money for a place worth it. However, this need of assurance of quality shouldn’t keep you from experimenting for food is pleasurable only if you keep adding diversity. But then how do you try out new places without running the risk of being ripped-off.
breakfast places in bangalore

Here are a few tips to see if the supposedly best breakfast places in Bangalore or anywhere you go is worth the money. Without having to order full-fledged meals you can tell if it’s worth it, and can excuse yourself with a cup of coffee or soup saving the rest of your money and appetite for some delicious smoked food in Bangalore at your go-to.

Bathroom
If the bathroom is gross the kitchen is surely grosser. It is usually the tell-tale of a restaurant’s attention to detail. Well sure there are lots of street side joints and dhabas that have dirty bathrooms but the food is still heavenly but that’s quite another thing. If you are coughing up big money for the experience rather than just taste then cleanliness is one of the primary facets of it.

Prompt Service
Someone receiving you at the reception and then seeing you to your table might be customary to exorbitant five-stars but prompt service is the least you should expect at a respected place. A server coming in quickly to fill out your glasses with water is the right signal. I remember going to one of the best breakfast places in Bangalore where the outsides were decent but simple but the moment I got seated water and the menu was by my side and the waiter was politely observant of when I would be ready with my order. He neither left me ignored nor stood on my head for a hasty choice. And I knew I had made the right choice.

Light it up for the ambiance

While good food and courteous service take all the brownie points for being the most crucial factors in running of a successful restaurant. And ambiance and lighting must be the last few things you would ever consider putting on the forefront, yet the two are incredibly important if you are planning the success of your restaurant.

Talking about the famous restaurant in Vasant Kunj, the ambiance plays an indispensable role in wooing consumers. But what exactly is ambiance? Simply put, it is the atmosphere or mood in your restaurant and mall which sets the tone for the customers and lets them feel good about their surroundings.

One of the most crucial factors in ambiance is lightning. While sumptuous furnishings and opulent floorings constitute a bigger picture, it is the lighting that makes the restaurant score all the points.

Coloured lighting is definitely in vogue these days. Flamboyant and bold tones are in rage, yet a dimmer look is necessary to instantiate an intimate, cosy feel. Depending upon the theme of the restaurant, it can go for either go for loud lighting or for mild and mellow tones.

best burger in delhi

This reminds me of Smoke House Deli, which has set a hallmark in producing the best burgers in Delhi. The ambiance at SHD is one of its kind- quirky and playful. The paintings and writings on the wall are cool enough to leave people befuddled and spellbound at the same time. The food is delectable, and the service quite prompt.

As it turns out, lighting makes a place come alive with the real flavour of life. Chandeliers, LED lights and coloured lighting put together everything that is required to set up the atmosphere- all in the right proportions. Lighting is a sure-shot tool that meets the visitors’ and the restaraunteer’s choices with an elite and a delectable charm.

Spicing up the lamb burgers in Pitas

A lamb burger recipe sounds pretty fine, not dramatically easy, but neither particularly difficult too. Something a person who has a fetish for non-vegan culinary stuff wouldn’t mind trying once in a while.

The recipe I came across on a television show was a different one though. Till now I was living under an assumption that burger is just served in a pita. But the show broke the confines of my assumptions- the burger is cooked in a pita!

lamb burger
Well that was something never even heard of before, let alone tried. But then, an ardent non-vegan, I had to try that version of lamb burger. I had no reason for doing so, I just had to.

So I hopped into the apron, all geared up to take the challenge. It wasn’t one of the most daunting, time-consuming recipes ever neither was the effort way too draining. The burger baby just demands attention- plenty of it too—to grill it to the right temperature and level in order to bring out the delectable flavour. It’s not difficult though—the pitas need to be just filled and sealed properly. You just need to shift and turn the pitas around in order to prevent them from getting charred. Sprinkle the lamb with coriander and cumin, cinnamon, salt and pepper and cover and chill for at least one hour.
Prepare the pitas and open one pita one at a time by cutting along the seam, halfway around the perimeter. Spoon-fill into the pitas and spread the veggies till the edges. Grill the pitas until the insides are thoroughly cooked and the bread is crisp.

And believe me, it works. Like wonders.

Cooking burgers in pitas is a delightfully wonderful stuff. The lamb is flavourful and the coriander and cinnamon adds delectability to it. The genius idea can as well be applied to tenderloin steak as well.

In a world which is struck with obesity as an endemic and the obese lot while trying to lose weight by practicing several methods as can be seen in their calorie consciousness at several breakfast places in Delhi. There are others who are struggling to gain weight due to multiple reasons.

restaurants in vasant kunj

Several conditions which might result in an individual’s inability to gain weight include but is not limited to genetics, high metabolism and fussy eating habits. One of the easiest ways to gain weight is to eat piles of delicacies like pastries and several fried palates in a restaurant in Vasant Kunj or cooking these in your home itself. However take a note that this is not a healthy way of gaining weight. In spite of gorging on thoughtlessly it is essential to gain weight in a manner which is natural. Apart from these fried and other stuffed with calories food it is important to include natural and healthy food in your meal plan. Go for high energy and nutrient rich food for weight gain. Here are some foods which you should be incorporating in your breakfast regime:

-Oatmeal Peanut Porridge

“100 grams of oatmeal provides you with 400 calories and 28 grams of unsalted peanuts give you about 166 calories” quotes a renowned health magazine. What better than including health and taste at the same time! Begin by dry roasting the oats and then soak them in a cup of water. Now add some water in a pan and add roasted oats with water. Cook it for 3 minutes while stirring it continuously. Now remove the pan from fire and add peanuts and raisins to it followed by milk and honey. To make it more interesting, add banana slices to it. Organizing an Office Party

Work. Home. Work. Repeat.

This is all that is there to a working person’s life. The corporate landscape has made a cut into our daily lives, sapping it off of things essential to living a quality life.

I don’t remember the last time I even planned a “Fun Friday”, let alone enjoy it. The voracious work requirements don’t leave time for anything else, yet only if we could incorporate frequent, informal meet-ups between company professionals, things would be positively different that way.

restaurant in vasant kunj

Social gatherings are imperative to infusing work life with an easy going vibe. I, for one, have seen company professionals bonding over a drink in restaurant in Vasant Kunj, or merely gobbling down burgers in Delhi streets. Such rapport eases the competitive climate and provides employees a much needed getaway from the daily shackles of work life.

Organizing a party, an office party for that matter, needs some planning in advance though. Depending upon the nature of the corporate a restaurant is booked. If you are booking a venue for an entire office, be careful with what you go ahead. If you are a group of colleagues contemplating some fun, a regular restro would do for you.

Next stop on the platter, undeniably, should be food. Even if the organizer is a vegan, he ought to spare a thought to the other employees too. Vegetarian and non-vegetarian delights should smoothly make to the party menu. Drinks, of course, are a big YES, too!

Sending in the official invite to all the employees is a crucial step too. Merely making announcements about the event won’t do; you have to send in a formal invite via mails or via calls. Sending in a formal invites via email is a hassle-free process; it allows you to conceptualize the strength and make arrangements accordingly.

Curb the Culinary Cravings at Delhi’s Hauz Khas

Hauz Khas doesn’t sound like a place that will have one go all Ga-Ga over it. But then, what’s in a name?

Hauz Khas is a place that will make stand up, and take notice. No, it isn’t one giant cauldron of beauty that will have you drool over it; in fact it is dingy. And dark, much like the usually crowded and littered streets in Delhi. It may be a little scruffy at the edges, but there is no funkier spot in Delhi to shop, eat and generally unwind.

Hauz Khas is a thriving hub for some absolutely punk restaurants. Punk, because they are not the usual north Indian restaurants where all you find yourself doing is forcing your taste buds into accepting the taste of the otherwise painfully mundane Dal-Makhani and Naan. Because restaurants in Hauz Khas, and the ones in nearby markets, are notches above that.

With a gamut of vegetarian and non-vegetarian delights, Hauz Khas’ palate dances to the tunes of the unconventional. I, personally, have both tested and tasted its waters, and my, was I impressed! Be it any genre of food, from Italian to Portuguese, you just can’t stop reveling in its cuisine. And it’s not just one restaurant that gets away with the food-junkies’ attention, all the restaurants in Khan Market and Hauz Khas offer an equally sumptuous mouthful.

Thick with an air of majesty, Hauz Khas’ restaurants offer nothing but a king-like experience. When I walked into Smoke House Deli, I was almost flattered by the over-the-top kind of treatment that I was being subjected to. I am not much of a spoilt brat; quite clearly it was only but overwhelming to have all that royalty gulped down the throat.

But if you are one of those spoilt little brats, the ‘Mumma’s’ all-time favourite who just can’t do without some good food, you know where to hunt, right?

Evening Delights :Hot Momos With Tea

So there I was in the middle of my random wanderings which have become a lot more frequent than before. Just out of nowhere, I realized I had ignored my hunger pangs way too long and the sudden craving for food was not unwarranted.

Luckily, I was blessed to be passing by one of the most popular destinations for food in Delhi. Though the place is not entirely familiar to me, I had heard a lot about restaurants in Khan Market being one the hottest of all eatery settings Delhi hosts.

Of course, a lot of it had to do with my old friend Rahul boasting of restaurants in Hauz Khas for a personal fetish for meat and I not being very comfortable his ways of devouring into flesh. Nevertheless, our friendly banters had made us challenge each other on knowledge of local places and in only a few months after meeting at college, we had started hitting it off together and discovering new palates and places to eat.

I stepped out the car and made way up a very small joint selling steaming hot momos. The tiny restaurant in Khan Market had all it takes to be a hotspot except may be ambience.  But for food explorers like me, such places are the best bet for their flavours and the feel of the city.

I had a plateful of those little veg delights arranged neatly in an ordeal fashion, each resting side to side like little white angels. The fiery red sauce spread casually on the sides, interspersed with a bit of white mayonnaise was the perfect blend.

As around the cup of hot tea, shooting off a strong aroma of cardamom based masala, the mini-meal was complete. And it was Rahul standing next to me, grinning ear to ear at us bumping into each other, the reason for which was our shared love for food.

Visit Khan Market And Hauz Khas For Some Real Taste!

If you are one those people who seeks solace in the refreshingly dingy lanes of Hauz Khas and Khan Market- congratulations, you have a brilliantly classy taste.

Yes, the streets are dingy and dark, and the roads muddied with pebbles and dirt. Yet, Hauz Khas and Khan Market are considered to be the most elite markets of Delhi. Wonder why? Plan out a weekend getaway at any of its restaurant, and you would surely get your answer.

Restaurants in Hauz Khas are brimming with name and fame. It’s a throbbing hub where people are setting up their restaurants. And believe me, they are no normal restaurants. The moment you set your foot into them, you would experience the magic of its creativity- restaurants in Hauz Khas are artistic and prolific in their own way.

The Flipside Cafe, for instance, casts a spell on its consumers through its enchanting ambience. It is most popular for its cakes that you would set your taste buds into turbulence. Another bakery famous for its cakes at Hauz Khas is Elma’s Bakery. It’s a pretty little doll house that would shower on you some of its sumptuous delights. From tea to cakes, the aroma and the taste will leave you craving for more.

Another market that happens to share the same spot as Hauz Khas is the Khan Market. Restaurants in Khan Market are a delight of another magnitude. You would normally find a Khan market restaurant slightly more expensive than its some other market counterpart, but the ambience will be worth those few extra bucks, for sure! Khan Market will pump up your tastes, from good to the best- because that’s what Khan Market is famous for! Khan Chacha is a never-miss delicacy; once you tread your foot into the Khan Territory, make sure you don’t come back without having Khan Chacha serve you!

Delhi And Its Own Magnificent Charm-Part

I am a resident of Mumbai and an engineering student. Last week, I had to go to Delhi, as I had my entrance exam here. I was really excited to come to this place because I am a ‘bad-baaaad’ travel freak. Carrying with me loads of amazement and over-whelmed for exams, I came to Delhi. The moment I came-in, I could see that the nation’s capital is nothing short of anything and has its own charm. Each and every person here portrays a different story altogether, different and unique. I could see that Delhi is at par with Mumbai in terms of honking buses, cycles, bike, rickshaws and a slight negligence in any way, be it by a pedestrian or a bike rider can cost them heavy! If I talk about houses and space availability, okay…lets not go there.

I was lucky enough to have my accommodation at my friend’s place. I reached late Saturday night and had my exam the very next morning. I thought that likewise best restaurants in Mumbai, I will get to savour best breakfast, but alas! Being a new-bie to Delhi traffic, I was late and had to rush to the exam centre. I would say that lady luck showered her blessings on me that day and I could reach there on-time. I was only a few minutes late, which otherwise I thought I would never be able to. Post exam, I was on verge of felling down…I was hungry and was struggling badly with every move. I haven’t had anything since morning and above all, I had to bear chest-congesting pollution. Now, in the follow up post, I will share what made me  come back well fed…
Stay hooked…to be continued…

You can have so many available options of Best cocktails and even their recipes for your party. But, what are the prior steps that you need to take before hand.

best restaurants in bangalore

First of all, make the guest list. Obviously, any of your friends will definitely feel bad if you forgot to invite him. So, by not taking any risk, do make a guest list that has the list of people whom you want to invite. Once you are done with your guest list, the next thing that you have to carry out is to calculate budgets of how much can you afford to spend and how much are you actually spending. The third step is to send invitations to the people in your list. You can call them personally or you can even have printed invitation cards to make it a formal invitation. It is preferable to send the invitations two weeks prior to the actual day of the party.

At last, you need to have the drinks, oh no, I must say cocktails. You can even prepare them at home but it would be really difficult for you to prepare for a group of people and for that purpose you can order it. You can get best cocktails in almost every part of India but yes, there are best restaurants in Bangalore that serve the best cocktail that you can ever get in India.

Eating out in Delhi is an unforgettable experience

Food is the mainstay of the culinary world and in a place like Delhi that witnesses an amalgamation of the traditional and the new, one can only imagine what they could be served with on their plates. When deciding where and what to eat, chic and welcoming fine dine establishment springs up on our minds. Are we neglecting the basics? Street food has been a vital part of our lives.

As kids we’d run to a nearby street food vendor for paani poori or a chaat and not a fine dine. As we grow, we chose to see only the shinier and glossier picture and follow the modern trend of eating out at fine dines just because it makes us look good – adds to our image and impression. We fail to understand that the joys in life are with the finer and little things and the joy and excitement of gorging on paani poori could never substitute for an 8-course meal at a restaurant.

There are restaurant for breakfast, lunch and dinner and even snacks, but would we really visit a restaurant for a quick bite? Some would, but the larger population are somewhat always found snacking away at roadside stalls and rickshaw food hawkers.

restaurant in vasant kunj

Last week, we went to this fantastic restaurant in Vasant Kunj in New Delhi and the experience was wonderful. The menu selection was just apt and had all that we were looking forward to. This place reflects a rustic feel that I could somehow connect with to a traditional highway food stall. It was an experience most cognitive to eating out with friends rather than this group of wonderful middle-aged individuals. Memories of evenings spent on-campus in Delhi and eating out at this food stall that served a variety of paranthas flooded in.

These are memories that stay alive and if any restaurant in Delhi could trigger that feel, it would be worth my time and money.
